A shed can be one of the most useful storage spaces in the home. But without proper planning, it can quickly become a dumping ground for awkward, bulky and hard-to-store items.
Which is why the experts at The Posh Shed Company have put together their top tips for maximising storage in the garden shed.

Unlock hidden storage by making use of the full height of the shed by hanging items from the ceiling.
Jenny said: “The ceiling space is normally the driest part of the shed as it’s away from the cold damp ground, so make sure you utilise it. Add a net and use it to store garden cushions or install some brackets for bigger items such as steps and small ladders.”
- Box Clever
Sheds often end up housing everything from paint tins and gardening gear to footballs and tools, so introducing sturdy plastic storage boxes is a simple but highly effective way to keep similar items together and will bring instant order to the space.
Not only will it make items easier to locate but standardising the boxes will make it easier to store.
- Adjust Shelving
Once you have all your boxes in order, make sure the shelves are suitably adjusted to accommodate them.
Jenny said: “Rather than trying to fit awkward items onto fixed shelves, adjust the shelving around your storage boxes so every inch is used properly. Shelves that are tailored to your containers will keep everything neater, easier to find and far less likely to end up in a jumbled heap on the floor.”

Pop bulky items, like bicycles and lawn mowers, in the centre of the shed so they can be easily removed when access to deeper parts of the shed is required.
Jenny said: “It might sound counterproductive to stow big items right in the middle of the shed, but it keeps access routes clear and makes it far easier to reach the items stored at the back, which is especially important in a shed where every bit of space needs to work efficiently.”

Sheds are not always the most suitable place to store paperwork, fabrics and other items that can be affected by damp. However, for homeowners looking to maximise every inch of storage space, Jenny recommends investing in an insulated shed.
Jenny said: “An insulated shed is far less prone to condensation and mould, making it a much more practical option for storing a wider range of household items. It can help create a more stable environment, which is especially important for anything that may be vulnerable to moisture.”
