Stories Flooring Shares Expert Advice on Choosing Wood Flooring Colour with Confidence

Choosing the right colour wood flooring can make all the difference to how a room looks and feels, say the experts at independent flooring specialists Stories Flooring.

Pale and natural wood shades can help reflect light and create a greater sense of space, while warmer honeyed tones can make a room feel more welcoming and lived-in. Darker wood flooring, meanwhile, can bring depth and sophistication, but needs to be balanced carefully with wall colours, furniture and natural light to avoid making a space feel too heavy.

Yarl Christie, Founder of Stories Flooring, said: “Choosing the right colour wood flooring is about much more than personal taste. Flooring covers such a large surface area that it can completely change how a room feels, from the sense of space to the overall warmth and atmosphere.

“The key is to think about how the flooring will work with the room as a whole. Consider the natural light, the size of the space, the wall colour and the furniture before making a decision. A wood floor is a long-term investment, so it is worth choosing a colour that supports the way you want the room to look and feel every day.”

Here Yarl shares his expertise on how to find the perfect wood floor colour for any space.

Room size

The colour of wood flooring can have a dramatic impact on how spacious a room feels. In smaller rooms, pale shades such as light oak, soft beige or natural wood tones can help bounce light around, creating a brighter, more open feel.

In larger rooms, the opposite approach can work beautifully. Deeper shades such as walnut, smoked oak or rich brown tones can help ground the space, adding warmth, depth and a cosier feel. This can be especially useful in open-plan areas or larger living spaces that need a little more softness and definition.

Light décor

Rooms decorated with pale walls, light furniture and soft neutral accessories can often handle a deeper wood flooring shade. Darker tones such as walnut, smoked oak or deep brown can create a striking contrast, helping to anchor the scheme and prevent the space from feeling flat or washed out.

The key is balance. Dark wood flooring is at its best when it has lighter elements around it, such as light walls, pale upholstery, natural linen or warm metallic accents. Without that contrast, a room can quickly start to feel heavy or enclosed rather than elegant and inviting.

Natural light

Natural light should play a big role when choosing the colour of wood flooring. Rooms that benefit from plenty of sunlight can often carry lighter floors, with pale oak, beige and natural wood tones helping to create a fresh, bright and uplifting feel.

For rooms with less natural light, it is worth thinking carefully about the overall lighting plan before choosing a floor colour. Darker wood shades can still work well, but they need support from layered lighting, lighter walls and reflective surfaces to stop the space feeling gloomy.

Wall lights, lamps, under-cabinet lighting and warm bulbs can all help bring out the richness of the flooring and make the room feel welcoming rather than shadowy.

Busy households

For busy homes, flooring colour is not just about style, it is also about practicality. In high-traffic areas, or homes with children and pets, lighter wood flooring can be a forgiving choice because everyday marks, dust, scratches and small dents are often less noticeable than they would be on a very dark, uniform finish.

Pale oak, natural wood and softly textured beige tones can work particularly well in hallways, kitchens, family rooms and open-plan spaces, where floors need to stand up to daily life without looking worn too quickly.

That does not mean darker floors are off limits. Homeowners who love richer shades such as walnut, smoked oak or deep brown should look for finishes with plenty of natural grain, texture and tonal variation. Hand-scraped effects, brushed finishes and visible knots can all help disguise minor imperfections, allowing the floor to feel characterful and lived-in rather than marked or tired.
