What is Spathroom?
Spathroom, or Spa-bathroom is an emerging homes and interiors trend which is all about creating a spa-style sense of luxury and wellbeing in your own bathroom at home.
It’s about beefing up the comfort and self-care aspects of the space – think fluffy towels, clean lines and clutter-free calmness. Gentle lighting and inspiring fragrances.

What we have noticed
Google trends shows that searches for the term have been stronger in the last 12 months than at any time previously. Also data from Pinterest shows that searches for the closely related term “home spa bathroom” is up 190% over a two-year period. The hashtag #spathroom has only begun appearing on Instagram in the last 12 months.
Why is it trending?
Abbas Youssefi, Founder of Porcelain Superstore, says: “How homeowners perceive their bathroom has changed.
“The bathroom has always been one of the most functional rooms in the home, but in a post-pandemic world, homeowners are looking to create gorgeous-looking spaces where they can completely unwind.”
Abbas believes large format, natural-effect tiles that exude effortless luxury will be the ones to watch in 2023.
He said: “Large format tiles mean minimal joins, which improves flow and can help the bathroom feel more expansive. Combine with natural-effect tiles, such as stone, wood or marble for an opulent finish.”
Where did this trend come from?
Brendon Haxby, co-founder of Naken.co.uk, said: “The bathroom might be one of the most functional rooms in the home, but how we perceive it has changed. Instead of clinical, cold spaces, they are becoming rooms packed with opulence.
“Increasingly, homeowners are carving out their own sanctuaries with little luxuries offering an indulgent finish. And the really great thing is one or two key accessories will make a huge impact, ideal for those who don’t have the budget for a full-scale renovation.”
Is it here to stay?
In the 1970s people thought avocado bathrooms were where to stay. They weren’t. Although we’re starting to see them again.
We definitely think that Spa-barthooms, or spathrooms, are here to stay for the foreseeable. With the cost of living crisis in a post-pandemic world, people are treasuring their home spaces and their mental well-being. Spathroom taps into both of these key aspects of modern life.
